How did it all start and why?
Parker Laboratories was started back in 1958 by Martin Buchalter. Headquartered in Fairfield, NJ, Parker Labs developed Aquasonic 100 Ultrasound Transmission Gel for therapeutic ultrasound in the early 1960’s. This innovation helped increase the efficacy of the fledgling ultrasound industry and continues to aid in the improved diagnostic efficacy of ultrasound technology. In addition to its global leadership position in the Ultrasound market, Parker Laboratories manufactures and sells, worldwide, a full line of products under its own brand names. In addition, Parker is a major producer of electrode gels for manufacturers of pre-gelled electrodes and of electro-surgery grounding pads. The company also offers private label packaging of specially formulated products. Parker Laboratories is focused on consistently providing products that meet or exceed industry standards and customer expectations.
What have you achieved so far?
Parker Laboratories has transformed the Ultrasound market and continues to innovate new products for this industry. Recently, the company developed and launched a line of new pain creams. Their HelixTM line of analgesic creams include: Tri-Active Therapy Cream, Helix CBD Therapy Cream, and CBD Clinical Cream. These topical analgesics possess cooling properties and are applied and dispensed by HCPs who practice hands-on therapy for muscle and joint pain. Unique to these new pain creams is the integration of CBD as an adjunct to the other active ingredients. For thousands of years, CBD has been used in the management of a plethora of health issues. In the field of pain management, the data supporting CBD use is increasing exponentially. A recent paper published by Argueta et. al. in Frontiers of Pharmacology, reports that CBD could have benefits for relieving chronic pain, improving sleep, and reducing inflammation. A review of 28 studies (2,454 participants) of cannabinoids, in which chronic pain was assessed, found the studies generally showed improvements in pain measures in people taking cannabinoids. The average number of patients who reported at least a 30% reduction in pain was greater with cannabinoids than with placebo.
What do you plan to achieve in the next 2-3 years?
Parker Laboratories plans to continue its penetration into the chronic pain marketplace through its continued development of its Helix line of analgesic creams. Parker Laboratories will continue to support the professionals who are most involved in the management of chronic pain through hands-on methods. These professionals are primarily Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine (DC), physical therapists and sports medicine physicians.
Why did Parker enter the pain cream market?
Chronic pain is extremely widespread in the U.S. and throughout the world. The most recent data from the CDC reports that more than 1 in five people suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain is one of the primary reasons individuals seek medical care. According to the Harvard Health Letter — More than 100 million Americans struggle with chronic pain, according to one Institute of Medicine estimate, at an annual cost of as much as $635 billion in treatment and lost productivity. Exacerbating the global chronic pain problem is the catastrophic problems that come with the use and over-use of opioids. Each year in the U.S., 10.1 million people misuse opioids, and more than 70,000 deaths are attributed to opioid abuse in the U.S. annually. Prescription opioid addiction has also been attributed to increased risk of heroin use. By providing an effective non-opioid pain management option, Parker Laboratories hopes to help improve the lives of patients suffering from chronic pain, while also reducing the risks of prescription opioids. And, by harnessing the power of CBD, Helix pain creams can provide a non-opioid, topical pain management option.
